New academy for leadership and excellence in coaching launched at IUPUI

Indianapolis, IN – April 8, 2015 — The IU School of Physical Education & Tourism Management at IUPUI announced its launch of the Next Level Coaching Academy.  The Next Level Coaching Academy is an exciting new leadership development opportunity for coaches with the ambition to make coaching their career and for those coaches aspiring to be a head coach.

“The Next Level Coaching Academy is designed within the frameworks of leadership development, athletic program development and career development,” said Jay Gladden, the Dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI.  “It strives to provide highly ambitious coaches with an opportunity to develop and grow their leadership capacity, professional capabilities, and relationships to enable performance excellence and career/life satisfaction.”

The program aims to provide developmental experiences not often available to coaches.  Specifically, the program is designed for aspiring assistant and associate coaches that want to be ready to assume the responsibilities of a head coaching position when the opportunity presents itself, or that desire to more deeply understand their responsibilities within a larger context of an entire coaching staff.  It is also valuable for less experienced head coaches new in their current role and looking to expand their network of ideas and support across a diverse spectrum of institutions, regions, sports and leaders.

Stevie Baker-Watson, the Theodore Katula Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports at DePauw University, initially collaborated with Gladden to advance the idea and was a strong force in establishing its noteworthy advisory board.  “The Next Level Coaching Academy prepares the next generation of head coaches to learn skills and develop competencies in areas they get less exposure to as an assistant coach. The use of technology and simulation, instruction from industry leaders, and its diversity of participants make it a distinctive experience in their professional development,” stated Baker-Watson.

The Next Level Coaching Academy is now open for registration and more information can be found at
